Ruta del Caribe II. Colombia

The third highway infrastructure concession for Grupo Ortiz in the country.

On 6 September 2021, the private initiative concession contract "Ruta del Caribe II" was signed between the ANI -Agencia Nacional de Infraestructuras de Colombia- and the joint venture "Estructura Plural Autopistas del Caribe", formed by Grupo Ortiz, KMA and Obresca. The Ruta del Caribe infrastructure runs between the cities of Cartagena -Department of Bolívar- and Barranquilla - Atlántico Department-. These are two of Colombia’s most industrialised cities, with two of the three of the country’s most important ports, along with two international airports. Although the main purpose of this infrastructure is to improve cargo transportation between the two cities, the corridor that it connects holds significant potential to boost tourism and commercial development at the regional, national and international levels.

The Contract
The contract includes the execution of studies, designs, construction, operation, maintenance, land and environmental management. The existing roads covered by the concession have a total length of approximately 250 km. The project also includes 94 km of new construction of second carriageways, bypasses, level crossings, grade separations and accesses. The execution is organised into 10 functional units, with "Functional Unit 0" including the operation and maintenance of the existing corridor. The concession term is 35 years, and the certificate of commencement will be signed in October 2021, with an approximate deadline for the execution of works of 8 years. Ruta del Caribe II is Grupo Ortiz’s third highway infrastructure concession in Colombia after Conexión Norte and Transversal del Sisga, both of which are already in partial operation.
